Neighbourhood Tree Blitz Targets Low-Treed Areas

ReForest London has 320 native trees to plant free of charge in four of London's lowest-treed neighbourhoods. Now we are looking for over 100 Londoners to dig into this ground breaking project and volunteer to make sure the trees take root.

“Planting a tree in 80 to 100 backyards a day is our goal and we will need as many volunteers as we can get to reach our target,” explains Louise Hollingsworth, Neighbourhood Tree Captain Coordinator. “This year we are focusing on four of the neighbourhoods with the lowest tree cover in the city. In coming years we hope to extend the opportunity to all neighbourhoods needing trees so all of London can enjoy the many benefits that investing in trees brings.”

Volunteers will receive free training on selecting a planting location, tree planting and tree care so that they will be prepared to plant trees for residents. Neighborhoods that are scheduled to be Blitzed will receive advance notice so that residents will be ready to receive their free tree.

Volunteer teams will be assigned an area and will be equipped with trees and a wagon to go door-to-door offering to plant a free tree for residents. The four neighbourhoods targeted include Knollwood Park, Argyle, SOHO, and Old East

Volunteers do not have to live in the neighbourhood to be Blitzed to help out. Teams, service clubs, businesses and students are encouraged to sign up as a group. Volunteers can come with a friend, or make some new ones while planting trees and improving the community.

Trees planted in yards decrease heating and cooling costs, increase property values, provide shade and privacy, and contribute to safer, more walkable neighbourhoods. These benefits will grow with each passing year.

This project is funded by the City of London’s Tree Me matching fund and the Richard and Beryl Ivey Fund, a fund within London Community Foundation.
