National Tree Day a Big Success in London

This year’s National Tree Day was a big success in London, thanks to the efforts and support of twenty-two Million Tree Challenge Partners. 2700 baby trees found new homes with Londoners! Partners either gave seedlings (the City gave saplings!) to the public or made the giveaway an internal one to staff, clients, students, or volunteers.City of London NTD sapling giveaway

National Tree Day serves as a celebration for all Canadians to appreciate the great benefits that trees provide – cleaner air, reduced energy demand, safer neighbourhoods, higher property values, wildlife habitat and connecting with nature, just to name a few. If any city can truly appreciate trees, it’s the Forest City, and what better way to celebrate trees than to plant new ones?

The City of London purchased 750 one-gallon saplings and gave them away at five locations across the city. People were thrilled at receiving free trees and they all went very quickly. Rick Postma, forestry technologist, City of London, organized this giveaway for the City and participated on the day at several of the locations where London residents enthusiastically picked up a free native tree.NTD City sapling giveaway Pond Mills Library

Jim Yoemans, community manager for Scotiabank said, "National Tree day was a huge success at the Scotiabank branches in London. Our staff and customers thoroughly enjoyed it and there was a genuine sense of doing good for our city."

Goodwill offered seedlings to the public for a total of 250 seedlings. Community engagement coordinator Marie Claire Bilyk noted, “The tree giveaway was a success throughout our five London stores.  Our staff and shoppers are bargain hunters, environmentally conscious and community-minded, so the 250 free trees were exuberantly adopted by our staff and customers!”Matt Robertson from Sifton
