Aftercare Events

Thank you to all the volunteers who helped us out at aftercare events in 2020! We had a great season providing essential care to newly planted trees. Altogether, 280 volunteers contributed 484 hours of their time, promoting the health of trees at 25 different locations. We couldn't do it without you!

We look forward to seeing you at planting events in spring 2021, as well as aftercare events in the summer. If you would like to see the list of 2020 events, click here.

Keeping the forest in the Forest City takes more than just planting trees alone! Caring for trees during their first few years is essential to the success of a naturalization project. That's why we go back to our planting sites in the summertime to help ensure their survival.

Being an Aftercare Assistant Volunteer:

Aftercare volunteers help pull weeds, add fresh mulch, perform tree collar checks, occasionally add deer repellent (Skoot) and more.

Our Project Manager Juliana, with help from Tree Specialists, will help you to identify the weeds that need to be removed around the trees, as well as identifying which grasses need to be covered in mulch around the trees so that they can retain moisture.

No experience or training is required to attend an aftercare event. We'll teach you everything you need to know at the beginning of the event.

Safety Precautions:

As a measure to ensure we keep our community healthy amongst the COVID-19 pandemic, we are requiring volunteers to pre-register. This will help us maintain group sizes of less than 20 people at any given event. Sign up here

We are asking volunteers to arrive with their own water, snacks, gloves, sunscreen, and bug spray. Masks are not mandatory, but you are encouraged to bring one and welcome to wear it if you'd like. We will be maintaining proper physical distance.

There is NO drop-in option - you must sign up if you'd like to participate.

If you have questions or concerns please email Juliana, our Project Manager at [email protected]

Do NOT sign up if you have any symptoms of COVID-19, have had a close encounter with someone ill with COVID-19, or have travelled recently. We ask all volunteers to bring their own mask since we will not provide any.

Be prompt – we’ll teach you everything at the beginning of the event. Here are some tips to help you have a great volunteer experience:

  • Wear sturdy shoes no sandals or flip-flops please.
  • Wear clothing appropriate to the weather – we care for the trees rain or shine! Long pants are recommended! Don’t forget sunscreen.
  • Bring water – we will not be providing water this year due to COVID-19 concerns.
  • Volunteer hours – Secondary students can earn volunteer hours at our events. Don’t forget your forms!
  • Some of our locations are tricky to find. Please look at our maps and watch for posted white signs directing you to the planting locations.
  • Cancellations – We do cancel aftercare due to inclement weather (eg. heat or thunderstorm warnings), so please check day-of on Facebook and our website if you are unsure.
