Project type: Park Naturalization
Year: 2018
Season: Fall
This fall, ReForest London held two separate planting events in Cantebury Park. During these events, over 400 native trees and shrubs were planted. Volunteers at these events included employees from Fairstone Financial, volunteers from Tree Canada, and members of the local community.
Volunteers at both plantings were taught how to properly plant trees. For many volunteers, this was their first time planting a tree as a way of making a difference in this neighbourhood park. Tree planting provided a great way for people to socialize and tell stories. A repeat volunteer shared how this training has changed her outlook on tree planting:
I see people all over town with mulch volcanoes – I want to knock on their doors and fix it!
– Anne Gehman, Volunteer
Others were happy to let us know of the great experience they had had:
It was my first time out to plant trees with ReForest London and it was a wonderful, fun, experience! It was a beautiful, sunny day spent with friends and community members who came together to make London a little greener and leafier. We were given an informative demo, then got to work digging holes, and working together to plant different types of trees. It was a reminder of how simple and easy it can be to have a sustainable, positive impact on our local environment for many years to come!
– Brittany Kinchen, Volunteer
ReForest London is grateful for all new and returning volunteers who took the time to invest in the community through the planting of trees. In addition, thank you to our Tree Specialists who put in time after the event to ensure all of the trees were planted properly. For other volunteers interested in becoming Tree Specialists, please check out our volunteering page – we’d love to have you join the team!
A special thank you to Donald from Tree Canada for spending the morning with us. A huge thank you to our funders of our plantings this fall at Cantebury Park: CN through the CN Ecoconnexions Program, TD Friends of the Environment Foundation, Tree Canada and Fairstone Financial. We cannot thank you enough for continuing to make the work we do possible.
