Tree Sale with Middlesex-London Health Unit

Project type:
Million Tree Challenge
Year:
2012
Season:
Spring
Location:
Central

The Middlesex-London Health Unit (MLHU) has a unique prescription to grow a healthier city.

As a partner in London’s Million Tree Challenge, the MLHU hosted a tree sale to make it easier for people to purchase a tree. Over 120 trees were purchased by MLHU staff and by the public.

According to Trees Ontario, cleaner air from our trees improves respiratory and cardiovascular health and reduces risks of cancer. And greener neighbourhoods encourage people to be more physically active. The Trees Ontario study further notes that researchers from around the world have found that clinics, hospitals, nursing homes, and even prisons that incorporate some element of nature, even just a simple view of trees, show higher rehabilitation rates.

Medical Officer of Health Dr. Graham Pollett, City of London Urban Forester Ivan Listar, and ReForest London's Julie Ryan spoke about the value of trees to human and environmenal health, and participants planted a large shade tree at the Fork of the Thames to celebrate the day.

Thank you to London Community Foundation and the City of London for funding in support of this event.
