Sir John A. MacDonald School

Project type:
Greening our Schoolyards

Fall 2006

Rain, sleet, and snow didn't seem to dampen the spirits of the students of Sir John A. MacDonald School as they helped plant 9 trees and 27 shrubs at this school near Oxford and Highbury. The children enthusiastically dug holes and moved A LOT of mulch. It was the first cold day in London with alternating rain, sleet and snow, and a few shining moments of sun. ReForest London and VanDenNest Nursery worked with the children to plant the trees and spread the mulch. We created two outdoor classrooms and planted a new tree near the playground.

Throughout the day, the children learned about why trees are important and how to take care of their new trees. One grade seven girl was overheard telling her friend, as they hauled a big bucket of mulch, "I feel like I'm doing something really good." Indeed they were, and children for generations will benefit from the trees planted this day.
