Old East Village Tree Nursery

Project type:
Community Initiatives Green Funds

About 80 new trees were planted at the Old East Village Tree Nursery located next to the Municipal parking lot north of Dundas between Adelaide and Elizabeth.  The nursery was started in 2008, and makes use of a piece of City-owned land that was previously abandoned. The City of London provided a fence and water for the project, and volunteers from Old East are maintaining it.

A group of enthusiastic volunteers potted up some of the trees that were planted when the garden was started in 2008, and some of these will be planted in Old East. Then the new trees were tagged and planted to best take advantage of the available sun in nursery. Species include Oak, Maple, and Hackberry, among others. After a few years of growing, these trees will be distributed by donation in the Old East community.

The project is part of the Greening the Commons project led by Old East Village Community Association, and funded by the Urban League of London. ReForest London is helping to revitalize this great initiative, and hopes it can be repeated throughout London.
