Tree Giveaways & Plantings Are Back For Fall!

The COVID-19 pandemic has Londoners appreciating more than ever the importance of being healthy and resilient, and recognizing how nature helps provide that every day. A greener London is vital for everyone's good health and planting more trees, at home or in parks with social distancing in place, is a great way to continue making London healthier.

ReForest London is happy to be back with fall tree plantings, tree giveaways, hikes and more, including an exciting event with The City of London, the National Tree Day tree giveaway to celebrate National Forest Week - September 20 -26.

"ReForest London is proud of our ongoing partnership and commitment with the City of London to plant trees in neighbourhoods and parks in support of London's Million Tree Challenge," says Brianne Curry, Director of Programs at ReForest London. "National Forest Week is a chance for Londoners to plant a tree for a greener and healthier future and celebrate our identity as the Forest City. Trees provide us with so many benefits, which all contribute to making London a better place to live, work and play. Now, more than ever, the importance of a healthy environment is clear."

“I am so happy that through our partnership with ReForest London we are able to continue on with the yearly tradition of providing free trees to Londoners for National Tree Day” says Jill-Anne Spence, Manager of Urban Forestry for the City of London. “Although the tree give-away logistics will be different this year, the end result of trees finding their forever homes will remain the same. There is no better act than planting a tree that makes you feel hopeful for the future”.

The popular tree giveaways are back thanks to the City of London, but it will be done differently this year due to COVID-19. We will be giving away 2000 native and fruit trees and Londoners can get up to 2 free trees per household, but you must pre-order your trees online at reforestlondon.ca and then come to pick them up at your designated time slot. Curbside, contact-free pickup will be at ReForest London's office, located at 944 Western Counties Road. Multiple pickup times are available from September 23 to October 2, 2020.

The National Tree Day tree giveaway will launch on our website on Tuesday, September 15, at noon. All orders are on a first-come-first-serve basis while supplies last. Donations will be gratefully accepted to support ReForest London's tree planting programs. The City of London is committed to providing special accommodations to those experiencing barriers in picking up a tree. Those seeking accommodations can specify their needs on the online order form.

If you miss the National Tree Day tree giveaway, Convertus will be hosting an online depot as well, which will go live later in September with pickup on Sunday, October 4 - details to come.

We're excited to again be planting trees at eight parks and natural sites around London this fall. Family-friendly public tree planting events are a great way to get out and enjoy nature, get some exercise and help your community. We welcome all volunteers, no experience necessary, but due to COVID-19 restrictions, you are required to pre-register online. For locations, event details and to register, check our website.

ReForest London will also have more learning and engagement opportunities for our community this fall. Londoners can take part in our guided hikes in forests and natural areas across the city this October, for a chance to connect with nature and learn more about our urban forest. We're continuing our popular Signal Boost Initiative series of online, environmental education workshops for the public. Upcoming topics include Seed Collection, Permaculture, and Biodiversity. We will also be hosting Aftercare events to give care to recently planted trees in some of our naturalization plantings. All the dates and details will be posted to our website in the coming weeks, so keep checking back!

ReForest London's fall planting events would not be possible without the support of our generous sponsors, including The City of London, TD Friends of the Environment Foundation, Old Oak Properties, Carolinian Canada, Cornerstone Architecture, KPMG, STIHL Ltd. Canada, TLC Landscaping, Nature London, Artcal, The Achievement Centre, Rotary Club of London-Lambeth, Booch Organic Kombucha, Wizards of Video, and a special thank you to Canada Life, Lead Sponsor of ReForest London since 2009.

"We know Londoners value trees, and trees help us to nurture and sustain a resilient and healthy community," says Curry. "We'll have lots of ways that Londoners can get a tree, or participate in tree planting and care events, hikes, and educational workshops, and we'll have COVID-19 protocols in place to ensure the safety of our staff and volunteers at all of our events. We invite you to come out to join us as we make the Forest City a greener and healthier place!"
