Time to Prune Your Trees

Tree

It’s pruning season in London! Pruning is one of the most common tree maintenance procedures. However, it is often misunderstood and can cause irreversible damage to trees if done incorrectly.

Pruning should only be done if necessary. If you must prune, follow these tips:

  1. Prune branches that are rubbing against each other, keeping only one of the branches in contact
  2. Remove weak, diseased, or dead limbs
  3. Do not remove more than 25% of the crown at a time

Oak Wilt

Although pruning is beneficial to most trees, it can cause harm to others. Oak trees are highly susceptible to the transmissible pathogen, oak wilt. Although oak wilt has not yet hit southwestern Ontario, it’s close! The City of London recommends that Oak trees should not be pruned between April and July. If you find you must prune an oak during this time, ensure that you seal the wound immediately, such as with pruning paint, or your oak and your neighbourhood could be at risk from the disease.
