It was not your average school day on May 8th, 2012, at Stoneybrook Public School as the students anxiously awaited their new outdoor classroom. ReForest London worked cooperatively with Stonybrook School staff and students to create a new type of learning environment complete with mulched ground cover, logs for seating, and a variety of trees and shrubs that someday will surely provide shade to this pleasant space.
The group was led by ReForest London's Gabriele Sanio, and given an interactive introduction to the importance of trees and planting native species. Education is one of ReForest London's main goals as an organization. Educating Londoners (especially the youth of London) on why to plant trees, what trees to plant, and how to do it is just as important as the physical act of planting.
The teachers and students worked hard and planted 5 trees along with 19 shrubs to construct their very own reading circle where they can learn, while enjoying the fresh air and sunshine.
We are grateful for the support of Boomerang Credit Union, Earth Day Canada and Lutheran Social Services for their support of this project.
