Union Gas DaveSaturday September 19, Union Gas and the TD Friends of the Environment sponsored the planting of 390 native trees and shrubs along the Marr Drain in south London. We had a warm but overcast afternoon to begin, yet it did not take long for the rain to start with a vengeance. It was inspiring to see 64 individuals from Western Serves, Union Gas and our own stock of volunteers work diligently in spite of being soaking wet the increasingly slippery clay terrain.

wet plantersMarr Drain originates from White Oaks Park from underground storm sewers. The water finally sees daylight in White Oaks Park where it then flows south through Jalna Park before becoming Marr Drain. The waterway then continues south of the city passing the Elgin-Middlesex Detention Centre on to the Murry Marr storm water management area. Naturalization of the waterways banks will mean cleaner water, increased wildlife habitat and more recreational opportunities.

marr drainWe greatly appreciate the support of TD Friends of the Environment Foundation and Union Gas  for support of the project, In addition to funding, Union Gas brought employees and their families to volunteer.  Without those initial financial contributions we would not be able to offer such volunteer opportunities or great efforts like Western Serves.

Just when we were going to call off the naturalization because of the bad weather our volunteers found new inner strength, rising to the challenge to plant the remaining 60 trees.

A big thank you goes out to all those who helped to create real change, helping us all breath easier, in only 2 hours.marr drain
