Life*Spin continueed their part in the revitalization of the Old East Heritage District with the GRAND OPENING CELEBRATION of OLD EAST COMMON at 423 Ontario Street (at Dundas) on Saturday, September 20, 2008.

Old East Common has been developed as a neighbourhood green space from a site previously occupied by a dilapidated house. This expansion of the Green Space included planting of 20 trees by ReForest London with the help of 30 University of Western students participating in Western Serves volunteer action day, and additional community volunteers.

The Green Space is a work in progress with an innovative storm water drainage system, a new garden shed, and a pocket-sized farm developed and maintained over the summer by neighbourhood children while attending summer camp at this location.

The vision of OLD EAST COMMON was initiated in 2006 after community forums identified green space and a community gathering space as a critical need for the neighbourhood. The Geography Department of UWO confirmed through a recent study that there is currently inadequate recreational and green space in the Dundas corridor area where LIFE*SPIN in located.

To date, several London companies have supported the project with donations and assistance, including:

  • Green Valley Recycling
  • The Evergreen Program through Home Depot
  • Gabriel Sanio from MicroEnvironments Landscape Design

Donations for trees or to any ongoing programs can be made online at . LIFE*SPIN is a registered charity and donations are tax-deductible.
