Glen Cairn Yard Trees

Project type:
Neighbourhood Re-Leaf
Year:
2008
Season:
Fall
Location:
Southeast

With the assistance of volunteer adult mentors, 15 youth from the Glen Cairn Community Resource Centre's Youth Changing Communities program planted 24 trees in their neighbours yards.

First, ReForest London send postcards to everyone in the chosen neighbourhood inviting them to have  a tree planted in their yard for just $5. ReForest London's Technical Director Bill DeYoung then visited everyone who responded to determine the best location and species for their yard.

Over two days, the youth, who were divided into three teams, rode through the neighbourhood in a bus, which took them to each of the addresses. The youth planted the trees, adding compost and mulch. Then the youth instructed the residents on how to care for the trees, giving each one a tree watering kit.

This project is part of Neighbourhood Re-Leaf: Glen Cairn, funded by the Ontario Trillium Foundation and TD Friends of the Environment Foundation.
