Glen Cairn Neighbourhood Tree Blitz - Sept 2016

Project type:
Neighbourhood Re-Leaf
Year:
2016
Season:
Fall
Location:
Central

It was a beautiful, cool sunny day on Sunday September 11th, it felt like the beginning of fall. A picture perfect day for the start of the fall 2016 Tree Blitz season at our Glen Cairn Tree Blitz. ReForest London staff were at Wheable Continuing Education Centre bright and early to set up headquarters and got to talk to a lot of eager home owners who were excited about getting trees for their yard later on in the day.

A short while later, our amazing tree blitz volunteers came out ready to change the Glen Cairn neighbourhood. Tree Blitzers went out with their wagons loaded with a variety of trees, mulch, and watering buckets (thanks to funding from the Healthy Kids Community Challenge and the Province of Ontario). Volunteers offered to plant trees for home owners in the area and when they ran out of supplies, our truck team volunteers were ready to restock them.

A special team of volunteers went to a condo in the area and planted 15 trees in their property close to a ravine. If you live on a multi-residence property – consider asking ReForest London for some trees to plant in your area! We are happy to offer trees to condos, housing co-ops, apartments – pretty much anywhere residential!

Home owners, who were given notices of the event in advance and had a specific tree in mind, came to headquarters to pick up their trees. We were lucky to have Sean Hunter from the Glen Cairn Community Resource Centre with us to tell residents about all of the great programs they have available and answer any questions community members had.

We were able to plant and give away 109 trees thanks to all of the hard work from our volunteers. These trees will go a long way towards increasing the Glen Cairn neighbourhood’s tree canopy. Residents will be able to take advantage of all of the benefits that planting trees bring. All of the trees planted will be counted towards the Million Tree Challenge and will help us reach our goal of planting one million trees in London.

Help releaf London by signing up to volunteer at some of our Fall Neighbourhood Tree Blitzes - every person can make a difference!

Thank you to the Ontario Trillium Foundation, the Richard and Beryl Ivey, a fund within the London Community Foundation, TreeMe and the City of London for being lead funders on this project.
