Glen Cairn Community Resource Centre

Project type:
Community Initiatives Green Funds

May 12, 2007

A little rain didn't stop the 25 volunteers who came out to plant trees in the Glen Cairn neighbourhood. Especially enthusiastic were the youth who came out for the centre. Z Group helped to sponsor a project on their apartment building grounds. A large area was converted from grass to a naturalized area with approximately 100 trees and 50 shrubs planted. The transformation of this space is amazing, and residents of the aparment building continued to care for the new planting bed throughout the summer, weeding and watering.

In addtion to the planting bed, 12 large shade trees were installed to provide shade to the apartment building. Each was surrounded by three shrubs for protection and aesthetics, and strawberries were planted amongst the shrubs to provide transition from the grass to the treed area. Strawberries were also planted along the perimeter of the large planting bed, and were a delight to children and adults alike throughout the late spring and early summer.

Following the planting we were all treated to pizza and drinks at the Resource Centre.
