What is the Amazing Tree Quest?Amazing Tree Quest

The Amazing Tree Quest is a city-wide contest to celebrate the important role that trees play in our lives. London is proud to be the Forest City, and our city is full of amazing trees. The contest allows individual Londoners (or anyone from anywhere) to nominate trees located in London, Ontario.

ReForest London hopes that as we deepen our appreciation for the individual trees that are important to us, we will value all the trees in our city. Caring for our amazing trees, and planting new trees for future generations, makes us a stronger, healthier community.

Tree contests like the Amazing Tree Quest have been held all over the world. Often call “Great Tree Quest,” other cities have also celebrated the cultural significance of their trees. Finding a city's most significant trees can lead to heritage tree programs. London does have some trees marked as heritage trees, but the program has not been active for some time.

How do I tell others about my tree?

Once you've successfully created a story, our web site will automatically create a URL or web address that is unique to your story. Use the Share This button at the bottom of your submission to tell friends and family about your tree through Facebook, Twitter, Digg, Delicious, and other sharing devices.

Or, you can pasted the URL into your own email or blog and share it with your friends and family.

The more votes you get, the more chances you have of winning the People's Choice Award.

NOTE:  The final date for submitting a tree and voting is August 15, 2011.

How do I register?

In order to enter a tree or vote for a tree, you must register on our website. Registration is easy - enter your contact information and your email address. An email will be sent to your email address with a confirmation link. Click the link and make up a new password and then you will be logged in and taken to our home page. Once there, you can enter your tree and/or vote for your favorites.

We will keep your information confidential, and will not use it for any other purpose except for this contest (unless you give us permission to be added to our email list).

How do I enter?

All entries must be received at the ReForest London website, by August, 2011. Here's how the contest works:

Find your favourite tree and figure out what species it is. If you're unsure, here is a tree identification website.
1. Take some photos of the tree. You can upload up to four photos.
2. Decide the best category for your tree.
3. For the Historic category you may want to make some measurements, so be sure to follow the measuring guidelines. measuring the circumference  |  measuring the height
4. Determine whether who owns the property where the tree is growing. If it is on private property, please obtain permission of the property owner before nominating the tree. (This will be important if the tree becomes a finalist.) Check out the City of London's map to determine property lines.
5. Nominate your tree online.
6. Tell your friends and family to vote for your tree and you may win the "People's Choice" award for the tree that gets the most online votes.

How do I vote?

In order to vote for a tree you like, you have to register. This prevents someone for artificially inflating the votes by repeatedly voting for one tree. Once you register on our site and log in, the process takes you back to the Amazing Tree Quest landing page. You then need to return to the tree you like and click "Vote" to have your vote count. If the number doesn't change instantly, you have not voted. You can vote for more than one tree.

How do I win?

The contest closes on August 15, 2011. The Amazing Tree Quest judges will then review all the entries and select finalists in each category. Finalists will be visited by the judges. If a finalist tree is located on private property, the owner must give permission to the Amazing Tree Quest judges to enter their property. Winners will be announced in September at our Celebrate the Trees event.

How can I tell others about this amazing contest?

We encourage you to post a link to our website on your website.

More importantly, if you have submitted a story, share your nominated tree with your friends and family members and encourage them to register and vote.

How to the kids’ categories work?

We have one category for children 13 and under. Adults are welcome to make nominations on behalf of children, but we ask that the tree selection and the stories come from the child.
